Whose bathroom is it anyway?

The one part of the home most people tend to ignore is the humble bathroom. Always viewed as an area of utility and practicality rather than a place to show off your decor chops, the bathroom does end up with a raw deal.

But that doesn't mean that you can't jazz it up in your own style. This blog post shows you some easy and quirky ways to add a stylish aesthetic element to the one place in your home that helps you relax.

Here's the easiest way to add interest to your bathrooms - decorate the walls. Begin by painting the walls a bright colour, then add framed paintings, mirrors and other objects d'art to create an enviable space.

Headed to the beach? Then don't forget to pick up shells, decorative corals and star fish! These beachy elements add a soothing and refreshing vibe to your bathroom. Also, every time you look at them, you'll be transported back to happier times spent vacationing on the beach. Collect and add these seaside souvenirs to large glass jars and display by the sink. The more variety, the better!

Outgrown your old cycle? Then why not add it to your bathroom for a touch of quirk!

Or dig out some old hand mirrors and replace your large mirror with those for a different look. Visit flea markets to get hold of different shaped mirrors to decorate your bathroom with. Or get an ornate mirror highlighted with show-stealing lamps and a vase of flowers like the one below.

Fresh cut flowers, gorgeous linen and towels, glass bottles of different shapes and sizes, cane baskets and cake stands that double as toiletry holders are just some of the ways you can add beauty to your bathroom. Always be on the look out for small, preferably waterproof things that add personality. Try to stick to a colour scheme or a theme and you're sorted!

Presenting some rustic bathrooms that are sure to steal your heart and evoke some serious envy:

And here's one that could just as easily pass off as a living room! Can you believe that's a good 'ol bathroom? Talk about luxury!

Wall Decor by theme

Looking to add Art to your blank wall and not sure how to go about it? Stick to a Theme! Not only does it give you direction, it also adds to the excitement of finding that perfect piece that'll fit in perfectly with the rest of your collection. Take for instance the wall above. The ordinary Apple gets an artistic and quirky makeover by becoming the hero of this wall. Different shapes, forms, textures and colours all with the apple at the centre make this a great addition to your home apart from being a sure-shot conversation starter!

Florals are probably the easiest to do. Pin up old postcards, collect an eclectic array of oils or raid flea markets to find vintage prints. Even easier - go scissor happy on some old books with floral pictures and illustrations. The end result will be stunning, no doubt!

Those with a religious bent of mind can take inspiration from the living room above that was featured in the Russian edition of Architectural Digest. The artwork is awe inspiring in its individuality. But all together - it certainly takes your breath away!

Botanical art is both classy and soothing to the eye. Here's where you can get your hands on some fantastic pieces - https://www.etsy.com/in-en/market/botanical_art.

If you are a budding Lepidopterist or butterfly collector, then here's the perfect way to showcase your hobby. It's simplicity adds tonnes of beauty to a blank space.

Clearly the owner of the living room above is an animal lover. The horse prints add warmth and a touch of the majestic to this gorgeous space.

Inspired enough? Go ahead....think of a theme you would love display in your home. Imagine the thrill of coming across a wall plate or a hand painted tray tucked away in a shop that goes perfectly with your theme! This is a home project that will only grow with time and definitely earn you a compliment or two!

Mirror Mirror on the Wall

There's just something about the way mirrors can transform a room. Of course, it has to be done right. Not only do they add a sense of depth and space (even within crammed apartments), they make an excellent foil for interiors that seem incomplete even though they are filled to the brim.

A large sized mirror adds depth, fills up space and carries character that defines the room.

Who says you need to stick to regular and conventional shapes? Experiment, find what matches what you have, refurbish and get ready for stunning results.

Have a blank wall and don't know what to do with it? No probem, just go ahead and fill it with mirrors and the result will leave you spell bound.

Place them in the foyer, above your mantle or above your sofas - Mirrors can sometimes take the place of Art and become conversation starters.

The First Post

A Ralph Lauren Chilton Sofa is backed by a console that separates the living room and entry of a New Jersey house decorated by Scott Sanders.

The first post is always tricky. You never really know where to begin. Your head is overflowing with ideas and its difficult to pin them all down at once. This blog is my effort to put all my ideas down in one place. Sort of a virtual scrapbook for ideas and inspiration. And trust me, a little bit of inspiration goes a long way. It gives you that tiny nudge that sends you down the right path and results in fabulous experiences or creations.

I am to get married in less than a year's time. And it has dawned on me that I will be running my own house. For years I have been reading numerous magazines on 'Good Homes' and on 'Housekeeping'. I have been a voracious pinner on Pinterest, collecting a vast repertoire of beautiful pictures. Soon, I will get to apply these practices and ideas to my own home. It's about time I immerse myself in putting together ideas for my own housekeeping. 'Home Decor & Ideas' is my humble attempt at that.

My decor style is an amalgamation of classic and eclectic. I don't really fancy contemporary decor and architecture. I find something very impersonal and cold about large vacant spaces. I love the lived in look that has special touches that reflect the homeowner's personality. My love for decor can be credited to my Grandmother and Mother who are proud home owners with a distinct home decor style. I hope my children and grandchildren can say the same about me one day.

I hope you enjoy the blog as much as I shall enjoy posting on it. All pictures used will be credited to the source and I take no credit for them unless mentioned otherwise.

I begin my first post with a few selected living rooms, each one warm and welcoming.....
